It's July 1st already! Where does the summer go to anyway?! Garden lore says "If the first of July be rainy weather, 'Twill rain more or less, for four weeks together.' Well, we have had our fair share of rain here at Blooming Hill this spring and summer but I'm not complaining because the gardens look better than ever and rain, barring floods, sure beats a drought--which we have lived through during many summers in the past--in my book any time.
The rain this year has caused the Lace-cap 'Nikko Blue' Hydrangea and the Oak leaf Hydrangea to be especially prolific. Hydrangeas like a partly shady place to live and some moisture to stick around and feed their hungry roots. Take a look at these beauties...
In the language of flowers, hydrangeas represent devotion, remembrance and even boastfulness, perhaps because of their long lasting, showy blooms. They certainly boast beauty while coming back every year faithfully to lend grandeur and grace to the garden. The blue and white of their blooms are my favorite color combination.
By the way, the weather forecast for today calls for a 50% chance of rain during the afternoon and evening. We can always use the rain here at Blooming Hill.
